Homework Policy and Evaluations
HOMEWORK POLICY

Each teacher has his or her own homework policy.  If at any time parents
have questions regarding a homework assignment, they should feel free
to contact the teacher at home.  Teachers’ phone numbers and email
addresses are located in the calendar.

Gan Homework Policy
Teacher: Mrs. Clarin

Traditional homework is not a component of the Gan curriculum, but
here are some ways to facilitate the learning process at home and at
school:

Please, remind your child to bring Tzedakah and a book bag each week.

Review all take-home materials.

Practice the Shabbat table blessings and the Sh’ma at home.

Review the Aleph-Bet and ask about our weekly vocabulary.
Use the vocabulary in a sentence.  (Example:  Ehad means one.)

Whenever possible, attend Shabbat services and special programming
at the synagogue.  It will reinforce what we discuss in class …and it’s fun!

Alef Homework Policy 2009-2010
Teacher: Mrs. Kesselhaut

There will be vocabulary flashcards distributed to each student, and
every week they will be responsible for reviewing one or a few words at
home.  Please take the time to review the week’s vocabulary word(s)
with your child.

Students will be responsible for bringing their book bags (with their
vocabulary flash cards and red folders) and tzedakah to class every
Sunday.  Tzedakah is an important component in the Alef Curriculum and
students should be learning to bring it each time they go to Hebrew
School.

day. They will be responsible to practice their Hebrew reading and
writing of letters. They will be writing their homework in the assignment
books they received in class.

class and they will be due the following Sunday that we meet for school.
They will have script writing quizzes(weekly- once we start the primer)
and sometimes a vocabulary quiz .The words will come from their

Gimel Homework Policy 2009-2010
Teacher: Morah Fallon

Homework will be assigned on Wednesdays.  Completion of homework is
essential to successfully reinforce the materials taught in class.

The homework will mainly be from the Primer workbook. In addition to
completing any workbook pages assigned it class it is in the  best
interest of the students to review the pages in the Primer once or twice
each week for a few minutes.

There will be short quizzes on reading and writing Hebrew throughout
the year.  These quizzes are to ensure the students are doing their work
at home and are progressing as they should be.

Please make sure they are bringing their books to class each time.  The
take home books for Gimel include the Primer and The Practice and
Review Primer (workbook).

Friday night services are a key component of the Gimel curriculum. Your
children will be leading services in May.  Please make every effort to
attend at least one Friday night service each month to familiarize and
reinforce the prayers taught in class.

Dalet History Homework Policy 2009-2010
Teacher: Mrs. Gross

Homework will be given on an as needed basis. All topics are important
in History and any assignments given will reinforce and remind you of
what was learned in class.
It might be a worksheet or to complete pages in their activity book. You
can be asked to research (with your parent’s permission/supervision) a
question on the internet. Your diligence in completing homework
assignments will be noted on progress reports.

There will also be quizzes/tests when we complete a unit. A review sheet
will be sent home at least one week prior to the test. The homework that
week will be to study for the test. It is best if you help your child study.

The class will also receive a Jewish Holiday Book to reinforce rituals and
customs of the holidays on grade level. We will also have a fun travel
experience to Israel throughout the year and the class might be
assigned to do a poster project on a city in Israel.

Please remember to send your child in with Tzedakah.

Dalet Hebrew Homework Policy
Teacher:   Mrs. Shapiro

The Dalet Class will not be assigned formal homework.  However, it is
crucial to a child’s reading progress to read frequently!

This can be accomplished in several, relatively painless ways.  Ask your
child to read to you!  Ask him or her to show you what story we might
have read in class that day.  Even if you can’t read Hebrew yourself, the
practice will be invaluable.

Come to services.  Ask your child to follow along in the Siddur, at least
part of the time.  Repetition and reinforcement are key.  Later in the year,
when your child is assigned a part to lead in the service, ask to listen.

Each student has his own script writing notebook.  The students are
given the opportunity to write and translate new vocabulary words.
Have your son or daughter show you their writing.  They are often proud
of new words.  Sometimes they can put several together in a simple
sentence, or tell you where a word may be found in a blessing.

Hay History Homework Policy 2009-2010
Teacher: Mrs. Gross

All homework assignments will be given to reinforce and remind you of
what was learned in class. It might be a worksheet, or to look up
something on the internet (with your parent’s supervision) or to
complete the student activity pages. Your diligence in completing
assignments will be noted on your progress report. Please take your
work seriously.

There will be tests when we complete a unit. There will usually be a
review sheet sent home a week prior to the test.

During our Holocaust unit, the students will be reading a Chapter book,
at home and in class. Students will be required to complete follow up
questions at home and will be required to do a project to present to the
class on the book. The students will also be assigned a Choose Your
Own Adventure book on the Spanish Inquisition, and will write
summaries of what happened to them.

Hay Hebrew Homework Policy 2009-2010
Teacher: Mrs. Shapiro

The Hay class studies the parashot (weekly readings) of the Torah.  The
students do this by acting out storified and fun versions found in the
book Sedra Scenes, and then reading parts of the Hebrew text from a
large print, simplified version.  We discuss the important points in class.
The student is provided with a folder and paper and is expected to write
a summary.  A minimum of 14 summaries over the course of the year is
required.  At least one week is allowed for each summary.  Please read
your child’s work.  Ask questions!  The summaries need not be long, but
they should include at least 4 major points.

Hebrew reading homework is not assigned.  However, a child’s progress
is dependent on practice and frequency.  Please ask your child to read
to you in Hebrew, even if you don’t read yourself.  In class, we read from
our text books, the Siddur, and the Chumash.  Attend Services!  Help
your child follow along if you can, or have him show you what is being
read.  Later in the year, when a part is assigned, listen to your child
recite.  Each child has his own script writing notebook.  Your son or
daughter can demonstrate his/her Hebrew writing ability to you and read
and translate vocabulary words.

Vav Eco-Judaism Homework Policy 2009-2010
Teacher: Mrs. Walsh

The Vav students will be given homework every Wednesday due the
following Monday. A copy of the assignment will be sent home via
email.   The assignment should take no longer than 20 minutes from
September through February.  Your child may find some of the topics of
particular interest and may even spend extra time devoted to
researching points of interest. In March we will begin preparing for our
Environmental Fair and students may need to dedicate more time to
their chosen topic.

In addition to homework the students will be doing several
“informational fundraisers”.  All proceeds will be donated to the FJCC to
fund a green project that the students decide to support.  The class will
write a promotional speech to be given during announcements at
Shabbat services. Therefore each student must sign up for one Shabbat
Service every month to speak during the announcements about our
fundraisers. Your child will:

1. become familiar with the Shabbat services prior to his Bar Mitzvah
2. become more familiar with public speaking in preparation to his
bar mitzvah
3. take an active role in educating the congregation about ways to
be more “green”
4. be responsible for Tikkun Olam, repairing the world
5. make the connection that Judaism and Environmental Awareness
is based in Torah and rabbinic Judaism.

Some of the assignments will be to discuss a quote with your family;
others will require researching on the Internet. The newly developed
Eco Judaism course work will balance learning about the environment
and Judaism. The success of the class is dependant on student
participation and parental support.

Tzedakah will be collected in class each week.

Vav Hebrew & Prayer Homework Policy 2009-2010
Teacher: Rabbi Jaffe

Students in the Vav class will not have weekly homework. At the end of
each Biblical book we complete in Sedra Scenes they will be given an
open book test, a test they can share with and get assistance from their
families, which they should complete within a week. Students must also
keep to their tutoring schedules, and try to attend services as often as
possible

EVALUATIONS
The Hebrew School students are formally evaluated two times a year.
Parents can schedule a conference with their child’s teacher at any time,
or meet with his/her teachers at the conclusion of Hebrew School.
Should any problems arise, parents are asked to speak with their child’s
teacher first; if problems persist, then with the Director and then the
Rabbi.
